Invincible Ski and Snowboard Area Guide

Invincible is a privately owned snowfield and mountain recreation area in the Rees Valley, near Glenorchy, New Zealand. It offers a fantastic alternative to crowded commercial fields – a great heli-accessed day in the backcountry. Experience the thrill of helicopter flight and then revel in the silence for an entire day while you use the 700m rope tow. No roads, no queues, no crowds – just some of the best backcountry skiing or boarding NZ has to offer.

There is a huge area of ungroomed snow on a convex slope accessible from the rope tow – 700m long, giving 300m vertical lift, from approximately 1500m a.s.l. to 1800m a.s.l. Snow conditions tend to be dry powder early in the season with good Spring snow later on. Slopes are wide open and sunny all day, but the terrain also offers plenty of gullies and chutes for more adventurous souls in search of a natural terrain park – it’s very varied and it’s completely up to you what line you take down the mountain. If you’ve got a hankering to conquer a new hill of untamed powder, Invincible Snowfields can deliver.

The ski area supplies Ortovox avalanche transceivers, but they don't supply helmets so please bring your own. If you have your own avalanche transceiver too, feel free to bring it along.  

The emphasis is on phenomenal natural snow and terrain, a backcountry experience more akin to club fields than large commercial operations which tend to reduce the feeling of being up in a mountain wilderness. There are uncrowded slopes on offer, fantastic terrain and lots of it, the chance to achieve silly amounts of vertical metres per day and the opportunity to stay in a complete mountain wilderness.  If you’ve never been off a groomed trail before be aware it’s quite different, and the less adventurous will find it challenging.  If you are a beginner we are sorry to say this is not the ski area for your ability level.  If you're an intermediate skier who hasn't been off-piste before Invincible is not really recommended either - there is suitable terrain available, but dealing with the rope tow will be frustrating for you if you are still getting to grips with just being on the snow.  The rest of you nutters know you want it.
